Dr. H. Jay Kyle

Serving in the Virginia Army National Guard as an enlisted infantryman from 1985-1993, Dr. Kyle attended Virginia Tech followed by the VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Following his graduation from veterinary school in 1993, Dr. Kyle entered active duty and served at Andrews Air Force Base, providing veterinary services to Andrews AFB, Bolling AFB, Patuxent River Naval Air Station, and Indianhead Naval Surface Warfare Center, as well as the US Customs Canine Training Facility at Front Royal, VA, and emergency veterinary support to US Secret Service Dogs stationed in the National Capital District.  His next assignment was as Chief, San Antonio Branch Veterinary Services, where he provided veterinary services to Army and Air Force installations throughout South Texas as well as the MRE plant in McAllen, TX. Following this assignment, he was an instructor at Fort Sam Houston, TX, where he taught newly inducted veterinarians, as well as enlisted animal technicians, preventive medicine technicians, and physicians’ assistants. His next tour of duty was at the Defense Intelligence Agency as a medical intelligence analyst for Central and South America and the Caribbean. An assignment to Germany followed, where he deployed to Iraq from 2005-2006. After redeployment, he assumed command of the 218th Medical Detachment (Veterinary Services) and deployed to Kuwait for 15 months in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He was assigned as the Command Veterinarian for the US Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, VA, then served as the Command Veterinarian for the Naval Supply Systems Command in Mechanicsburg, PA, from which he retired in 2015. Following a year teaching JROTC at Carroll County High School in Hillsville, VA, he became the Assistant Director of Health Professions Advising at Virginia Tech. Most recently he served as the Associate Director for Student Success at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine.

His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 campaign stars, and many others.
