The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5311 in Christiansburg, VA was named in Honor of Corporal Leonard E. McCoy. Corporal McCoy was the first soldier from Montgomery County to be killed in action during World War II.
 
Corporal Leonard Eugene McCoy was born on April 18, 1915 in the McCoy community of Montgomery County. Corporal McCoy was a member of Battery C, 59th Coast Artillery and was killed in action at Fort Mills, Corregidor, Phillipine Islands on April 29, 1942 during a heavy artillery bombardment by the Japanese Imperial Army. He was 27 years old. Corporal McCoy is buried in the Manila American Cemetery, Plot N, Row 15, Grave 83.
 
We are indeed proud of our native son who gave his life in defense of our country. Corporal McCoy was awarded the Silver Star Medal, a medal awarded for heroism and the Purple Heart.
